Pre Competition Training
You must be available for training which will probably be held on Thursday evening starting at 6pm – we will be charging a nominal fee of £5 for these sessions to help cover overall costs ie expert trainers, transport, stabling, entry fees etc.
Selection process
All members who wish to be put forward for selection must do so by Thursday 12th May, by doing so you are agreeing to be available for the two days of the championships and will be available to attend the training sessions.
Mrs Peta Roberts FBHS has agreed to judge our candidates both on flat work and jumping on Thursday 19th May starting at 6pm. A short list will be put together following this selection process and training will start with all those selected. She will be judging all riders on their position and influence on the horse/pony( this is how the championships are judged) this means that it is you that is being judged not the horse. For example if your horse is being naughty you will not necessarily be marked down.
In Mid-July a further selection competition will be held probably at Solihull Riding Club where the short listed candidates will compete against each other in Dressage and Show Jumping in front of a panel of outside Judges, the two highest scoring Juniors and Seniors from this competition will make up the team.
Training will then continue with the final team up to the competition.
Team Uniform
You will be responsible for providing your own team uniform, what this is to be is not yet decided due the new logo branding of the Pony Club which has taken place this month. Last year it was a white shirt and pony club tie, Pony Club sweatshirt & badge, cream jodhpurs, black boots, gloves and riding hat. It does not need to be new just clean and tidy ,turn out of both horse and riders is judged on the day as a separate competition, which means more chances for a rosette.
Things to think about
To try and make this as realistic as possible the two main selection dates are designed to put you under pressure because that is how it will be on the day. Yes it will be exciting and fun but you will also be nervous and more importantly so will your horse. Do not think that your horse/pony will behave in the same way at the Championships as it would at home, they will have spent a night in a strange stable surrounded by strange horses, sounds & smells, just like you they probably won’t have had a good night’s rest. They are then disturbed at a very early hour to be brushed and plaited from head to toe only to spend the day being taken away from their only horsey friend there to compete with flags and banners flying and constant commentary over a PA system. It is a long couple of days for both horse and rider which doesn’t end until your horse is safely home fed and turned out in its paddock and all the tack and equipment unpacked and put away.
We competed for the first time last year and learnt a lot which will hopefully make things a bit easier this year but it is still a lot to take on particularly for the Juniors. Remember there will always be next year and that we will hopefully be providing more opportunities of a similar nature later in the year.
If you decided to put your name forward – Good Luck!! If not supporters are always welcome!
